Professor John E. Casida and his group have investigated fundamental aspects of the action, metabolism, interactions and fate of pesticides and toxicants. He has
pioneered research on the mode of action of most major insecticides and their synergists. This work includes the discovery that ryanoid and cyclodiene insecticides disrupt the calcium and SABA channels, which has opened up research directed towards identifying new compounds that interact with GABA receptors. He has synthesized compounds that are more active and less persistent than insecticides currently commonly used in agricultural practice. His research has provided a rational basis for the evaluation of the risks and benefits of pesticides and toxicants. The award of the Wolf Foundation Prize for Agriculture recognizes Professor Casida´s unique contributions to basic science and to the development of safer pesticides for agricultural use.
