He was born in 1923 in Barcelona, Spain and since 1946 has consecrated himself to painting. His early works show influence of Dadaism and also of Picasso, Miro and later on, of Paul Klee.
In 1948 he exhibits for the first time and, in 1950, he settles in Paris, In 1945 he starts making use of “materials”, stressing texture and relief, sometimss incorporating tearing, scratching and collage. This tendency conquers his art since 1953.
In 1950, he travels to France and participates in an Art Contest sponsored by the Carnegie Institution, from Plittsburgh. In 1962, he shows at the Spanish section of the Biennale of Venice and, from 1953 on, he exhibits at the Biennale of Sao Paulo, in the U.S.A. and in Europe.
In 1964, TApies participates -among others- in the “Documenta” show in Cassel and is awarded the Guggenheim Prize in New.York.
In 1970, he is invited to decor the walls of the theatre of St, Gallen, in Switzerland.
In 1973 – 4, retrospective exhibitions of his works take place in Paris, Copenhagen and Berlin.
